My congratulations and Slakinov that you’ve finished that masterpiece!
    Thank you!

It would be pretty rad if you included arcade mode in the retail version. Really enjoying the game so far!

Very nice little clone of asteroids – darn hard too when those pesky humks of rock start speeding up!! Still I finally got the ALL-TIME highscore spot …. for now! :)

Well, i’ve tried hard to beat you but your score still stands highest and i’ve yet to pass 200k. Do you have any advice for how to survive the high-energy rock spawns?

I’ve tried firing slowly to preserve maximum energy for shields while trying to pick bits off and mop them up to keep the numbers down, but the big rocks hit so hard i get bounced into something before i can react, or rattled between one and an edge until my shield fails, or one of the small fragments gets so much energy it kills me before i see it.

I’ve tried shattering the fast rocks as fast as possible in the hope the fragments will collide rapidly and average out their speed to something more sensible and the smaller pieces wont hit as hard, but then the screen gets so cluttered. Waves of collision ripple through the colliding cloud of fragments even faster than the fast rocks and multiple rebounds hammer my shield until i die.

I’ve tried keeping a good number of the red pushers around to act as bumpers to slow down the fast rocks, and that works a bit but not very reliably.

        Performance rating: Human 2.0 Beta

(I’d been playing on minimum graphics for maximum nostalgia and frame-rate. Switching to maximum made things syrupy and slightly easier, once i’d got used to the slower shield key response.)

Nice score – well done – knew it was only a matter of time.. well now ive got something to aim for… :P

Oh and as for surviving the high speed rocks – its called “luck” was going for your score and got caught out by speend shards 3 times.. just couldnt get them darn it… but i will try again.. just not at 3.00 am…
            :p

The difficulty ramps up pretty sharply when you get to the little orange things that live in rocks – I get a sudden swarm of 30-40 of them just after they first appear, which is way more than can be dealt with without a lot of luck. Pretty much a dead end for me. Perhaps I’m missing something.

    • Slakinov says:

Remember to use your shields :) Large groups of orange critters can be stunned with a single pulse of the shield, then ‘dealt with’ using your turret before they wake up. Try to avoid contact with them when they’re awake – they will steal your materials.

With the all-time score do I get a free copy of the game ? Well it doesnt hurt to ask now does it? :P

  8. gcghost says:

Yea, the game doesnt work at all for me. Cant launch it. I can access all the extra info bits, but when I go into the Career one I cant leave it. Arcade just wont launch.

    • Slakinov says:

Strange…? Could you tell me which OS and browser you’re using?

      • gcghost says:

        Win 7 and Firefox 4.0.1

        • Slakinov says:

Sorry I cant recreate your problem. That shouldnt even be possible…
Are you using an incubator build of flash player? Or running a VM of windows from within OSX?

          • gcghost says:

It just started working. Might have been flash within firefox derping hard. Fun game and challenging to the point where you want to push yourself further. I will definitely be buying the bundle come the weekeend. Keep up the good work.

Excellent rock-breaking algos, it’s very fun to pick off the rocks in long slabs! Have you ever played the arcade game Sinistar (1982), you should find it and shoot their rocks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcyBtVwAsfg They’re great fun to shoot — they eject crystals also, and last much longer before they split apart if you shoot them more slowly. Yours are way prettier and more fun due to their physics. A bigger playfield would be super fun for your game. Scrolling, or just a larger static field. Superior game!!

Some advice for anyone trying to best my demo scores:

Probably the most important thing is to keep your energy levels up by moderating your fire.

Shooting a lot is rarely a good way out of trouble – you can’t rely on rocks to shatter as you want, the red and orange ships just go into stealth mode until you’ve hit them enough, the orange stars take a lot of killing, and shooting the blue comets won’t even slow them down. Generally shooting rapily is a good way to run out of energy and so get killed when you can’t raise your shields.

Holding the fire button makes you shoot at the fastest sustainable rate. If you’re timing every shot you’ll end up firing a little slower or your energy will tend to deplete. I use the autofire a lot if i’m not being collided with much, adding extra pauses to recover after shield use.

When fighting lots of red and orange ships at short range i use rapid 2 or 3 shot bursts and try to pause to recover fully after each.

If you’re being collided with, a single shot and a shield pulse make a good combo, but be sure you’ll still have energy for your shields before you fire.

It’s tempting to fire rapidly into the clouds of small orange energy suckers, but it’s amazing how much more effective shooting slowly is, especially if you’ve sheparded them into a tight flock.

The next key to getting a good score is learning to kill the orange stars without dieing so you can win back the lives you loose at other times. Sitting back and firing slowly works quite well, if you can afford the time. Killing them in one go with rapid fire only works if you can first get to point-blank range with full energy so that all your shots will hit and you’ll have sheilds left to get you out of the resulting bullet-concealing explosions. The neatest trick is to fly slowly in-between the bullet streams and collide with the star just right to stop you moving and stop it rotating, then wipe it out with one controlled burst. But it’s rarely so tidy and i’ll use a mix of chipping away from long range, manouvering and trying to save up energy, a couple of medium burst when i think i’m safe, and maybe drift in close at the end. And always save some for shields. And sometimes it’s just not worth the risk of trying.

    Rocks:

Fear long thin rocks. If you bounce into them off centre they often spin round and hit you again just as you’re dropping your shield.

Fear colliding with little rocks near to big rocks – after bouncing off your shield they can easily rebound off the big rocks and back into you.

Small rocks make poor cover. Although they’ll slow an incomming big rock a bit, they do it by taking it’s energy energy for themselves and so rushing more rapidly towards you.

I see the rocks as temporary carriers of their kinetic energy, which leaps from rock to rock with each collision. I find it helpful to think of the energy as my opponent that i’m to fear and am focused on destroying.

A few minor things to add to what moth says:

At later stages, conserve your fire so you don’t have a bunch of small shards bouncing around. Focus on staying alive and let the asteroids bounce around and bleed off energy. When enemy ships show up, focus on them first.

Also very helpful is turning the graphics down to Minimum. Even on Basic explosions will sometimes obscure the area around your ship and you’ll miss an enemy ship or small piece of asteroid that’ll kill you.

      • NickofSantaCruz says:

And to moth: I’m working hard to beat your score! ;-p

        • moth says:

my 290k score was done with maximum graphics which on my old laptop made the game run a bit slower, but since then i’ve gone back to minimum graphics (and bump the process priority one notch) which runs about the same as on a friend’s much faster machine. So i reckon my 274k score is a fair target :)

p.s. when i set the appropriate chrome thread priority to ‘real-time’, my machine eventually locked up. So i don’t recomend that, but one notch above normal seems to be good.

Love this game, can’t stop playing it. I’ve passed the link on to all my friends and they love it too. Well done sir!. Bought the full version and beat that too (that end boss was such a pain…).
Plans to add new levels and upgrades (like a special cannon shot that immobilizes an asteroid)? And I’d like to echo the call to include the arcade mode in the retail version. It’d also be great to see the in-game field size increased, to make full-screen mode less choppy as well as give plenty of space for new content.

    Cheers,
    -Nick

Just completed the Career Mode for the first time without losing all my lives, can I congratulate you on a stellar game, not only have I been trying to master it for a month but I think the upgrade feature gives it the longevity to keep playing beyond the first completion. Maybe the ability to use the fully upgraded ship through the game again, just for shits and giggles, would be a good idea for future versions of the title?

FU*K! I’ve never in my life bought a game. BUT THIS TIME, I WILL DO IT, RIGHT FU*KING NOW.

Amazing game, amazing music, amazing price!
